Verona, a city located in the Venetian region of Northern Italy, made famous by Shakespeare in Romeo and Juliet was the second stop in our Euro trip this spring. As it was a pit stop in our journey we only had 5 hours to absorb everything in. What did we do? How did we decide what to see and what to avoid? Read on to find out how we spent five hours in Verona!

How do you get to Verona?

Train, would be my best answer. It does not matter whether you are arriving from Venice, Florence, Naples or Milan; there is a train to get to Verona for sure. We arrived in Milan Malpensa and first took a train from Malpensa to Milano Centrale. My go-to website http://www.trenitalia.com/tcom-en the reason being it displays a lot more trains for us to choose from. You do need to know what the Italian name of the station is but that is a simple thing to master these days. Our ticket to Verona Porta Nuova from Milano Centrale cost us 9.9 Euros in a – SBB train. It was a 1 hour 23-minute ride and it was extremely comfortable.

What do you do with your luggage?

Have no fear, luggage storage is here 🙂 Literally every train station in Italy has a luggage storage option, and Verona Porta Nuova was no different. The office was located on the ground floor on the right-hand side of the exit. They are open from 8 AM to 8 PM. It costs 5 Euros for the first 5 hours, 0.90 Cents from the 6th to 12th hour and 0.40 cents from the 14th hour onwards. All you need to do is show your passport, pay and be on your merry way!

What sort of weather can you expect during mid-April in Verona and what to wear?

It was around 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit), breezy and not too warm, you could survive in a light jacket. For Sri Lankan’s who are used to the 32-36 degree Celsius weather, it might seem a bit cold. My suggestion would be to wear a good pair of jeans, a t-shirt, and a leather/denim jacket. A good pair of ankle boots, Skechers or a ballet pump would work for footwear. On the accessories end, a pair of sunglasses is all you need to complete the outfit.

What attractions can you possibly cover in such a short time?

I am not going to give you false hopes and say that you can conquer the city in 5 hours. Frankly, that is definitely not possible. Our plan from the beginning was to visit “Juliet’s house” better know as “Casa di Giulietta“. So that is what we did, what we experienced along the way was a total bonus. There is a bus to get you closer to the location but we decided to walk. It was a 2.2 km walk and we simply followed the navigation of Google maps. There were several monuments and a gorgeous park on the way to our location, I am not sure of the name but it was a scenic route that would have been missed had we taken the bus.

My advice would be to pick one attraction that you really want to see and take a stroll to that place, which allows you to absorb all the architecture, the culture anything else along the way. This way your not too tired and at the same time will be able to get a feel for the city. To end the day we all sat down for a nice beer @Lowengrube Italia which is located inside Verona Porta Nuova station. They have a great menu and a lovely view of the outside.

I hope this post provided an idea of what can be done in this beautiful Italian city in such a short time and of course I will dedicate an entire post to “Casa di Giulietta” as it deserves one.

Until next time!

Ciao.
