Ever since I started watching football, Spain is a place I have dreamt of visiting… When we decided to visit Europe last year it was only natural that Madrid made the list. Before our trip, I came across a segment on Fox Life – “From Spain with Love” and it’s on this that I first discovered “Mercado San Miguel”

Located in Plaza de San Miguel, which is a few steps away from Plaza Mayor this is the place to go if you are a lover of good food, fresh produce and “Churros”. More than anything else this is a perfect example of Spanish culture and a beautiful fusion of modern amenities and historic architecture.

Here are a few reasons why this is one of the best places to visit – when in Madrid!!!

  1. Fresh fruits – from massive tomatoes to gorgeous maroon cherries, Mercado San Miguel has it all… Prices are neatly listed and the service is super fast 🙂
  2. “Iberico” ham, anyone who has watched anything remotely related to Spain knows what this is. Lovely strips of the best and most possibly the tastiest ham in the world and Mercado San Miguel has this in galore.
  3. Olives and churros another two words that just follow behind Spain. You get a wide variety of Olives and the churros, no words to describe but simply mouth watering.
  4. The souvenirs – there are a few shops that carry lovely postcards, tiny bottles of olive oil wrapped neatly is mesh bags so you can take a small part of Spain home with you!
  5. The best part of all, “The People”, yes they are busy, this is a bustling marketplace but never too proud to flash a warm smile or help you out.

So next time you are in Spain and drop into Madrid please do leave some time to visit this truly magical place.

I am Chavindie, and I wanted to start blogging for two reasons. First, because I love writing, let it be anything from a sentence to a paragraph, witty comment or poem as long as I can scribble I am happy. The second reason was the lack of information on visas for those of us applying from Sri Lanka.
